Most people are doing this wrong… (posture edition)

When it comes to posture and back pain, most people think the solution is simple: “sit up straight” or “stretch more.” It sounds right; however, for many people, that approach alone doesn’t actually fix the problem. In fact, it can sometimes make things worse.

The common mistake
The biggest mistake we see is people trying to hold “perfect posture” all day. They sit upright, pull their shoulders back, tighten their core – and try to stay there for hours.

The problem?
Your body isn’t designed to stay in one position for long periods of time – even a “good” one.

Holding a rigid posture can lead to:

  • Muscle fatigue
  • Increased tension through the neck and shoulders
  • More stiffness and discomfort by the end of the day

If you’ve been attempting to “sit properly” but still feel sore or tight, you’re not alone.

What actually works
Instead of chasing perfect posture, focus on this: Movement > Position.
Your spine and nervous system thrive on regular movement and variation, not rigidity.

That means:

  • Changing positions often
  • Taking short movement breaks
  • Avoiding staying in one posture for too long

Even small changes throughout the day can make a big difference.

Try this: The 2-minute reset

Here’s a simple routine you can do once or twice a day to help reset your posture and reduce tension:

  1. Stand tall (30 seconds): Gently lengthen through your spine. Don’t force it. Simply think, “tall and relaxed.”
  2. Shoulder rolls (30 seconds): Roll your shoulders up, back, and down slowly 10 times.
  3. Chest opener (30 seconds): Place your hands behind your back and gently open your chest. Take a few deep breaths.
  4. Neck mobility (30 seconds): Slowly look left and right, then tilt ear to shoulder on each side. Move gently (no forcing).

A better way to think about posture; Instead of asking, “Am I sitting perfectly?” Ask: “Have I moved recently?”
That shift can take pressure off your body and help you feel better throughout the day.

How chiropractic care can help – If you’re dealing with ongoing tension or posture-related discomfort, there may be underlying joint restrictions or movement patterns contributing to the issue.

Chiropractic care focuses on:

  • Restoring healthy movement in the spine
  • Reducing tension and restriction
  • Supporting your nervous system and overall function

Combined with simple daily habits like the reset above, it can make a noticeable difference in how you feel.
