Many of us see chiropractic care as something for adults—for when we injure our back playing squash or sleep badly and wake up with a sore neck. But it’s actually a form of health maintenance that’s for everyone—from octagenarians down to newborns.
So why would you take your child to a chiropractor? Well, as we know, chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system -and since kids are still developing on all fronts, it’s a really good idea to do something that monitors their ever-changing nervous system. Research over recent years has revealed the first few years of life are paramount for optimal nerve system growth, so getting a chiropractor to assess the spine for evidence of dysfunction for ongoing optimal brain–body communication is really important.
Another reason to keep them monitored is all the damage kids can do in their everyday rough-and-tumble lives. Sports may be the obvious issue here, but sometimes it’s more subtle than that – so many kids are now lugging around not only textbooks, but a backpack loaded with a laptop, charger and a bunch of other heavy tech. Heavy school bags can lead to poor posture, and chiropractic adjustments can help align their spines and relieve that backpack-induced stress.
And let’s not forget about those growth spurts – you know when they grow through two clothes sizes in one year and your credit card can’t keep up? Well, all that rapid growth can sometimes throw their bodies out of whack a bit. Chiropractic adjustments can promote proper spinal alignment and joint mobility, which is crucial during these periods of growth. It’s like giving their bodies a periodic tune-up as they move from one stage to another.
And this isn’t just theory read in textbooks. We asked our own chiropractors what they observe at the clinic when treating kids and they said parents have reported the following (sometimes on top of the actual issue they’ve come in for)
- Better concentration at school
- Improved sleep
- Better performance in sports
- Less irritable due to reduced symptoms
- Better posture and movements
- More energy to play and study
- Faster recovery from cold and flu
So if you have some spare time in the upcoming school holidays, maybe bring the little (or bigger) ones in for a tune-up to make sure they are tracking as they should be.
