If you’re receiving this newsletter you likely already know a thing or two about why chiropractic is a great and safe option for alleviating pain and discomfort. But sometimes people think the focus on the spine means you only make an appointment when you have a sore back. This article will hopefully help clarify the scope of chiropractic care and what ailments it can, and can’t help.
While it’s obvious to go to a chiropractor when your back is giving you grief, you might not realise this extends upwards, too. Many people report a reduction in neck pain and headaches when their spine is correctly aligned. You also may not realise that it’s not just about the spine but that chiropractors also work on other joints in the body, such as the shoulders, hips, and knees. By addressing joint restrictions and misalignments, chiropractic treatment aims to improve overall joint function and mobility.
It’s great if you’re sporty too. Studies have suggested that chiropractic adjustments can enhance range of motion and muscle strength, vital for athletic performance. And some people even find it can calm their whole nervous system and bring about a lightness when times are tough
And while we’d love to say Chiropractic is a one-stop shop for everything medical – we can’t actually cure everything.
While this type of care is extremely beneficial for musculoskeletal issues and their knock-on effects, it is not a substitute for medical treatment for serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, or infections. Chiropractors are trained to recognise when a patient’s condition requires medical intervention and will refer them to the appropriate healthcare provider.
It also won’t sort everything out if there are major lifestyle issues that need to be addressed at the same time. While chiropractic can make you feel a lot better, it works a lot more effectively if you are taking care of yourself, eating reasonably, doing some exercise, and getting adequate sleep. It’s part of a full-body holistic picture.
So ask lots of questions when you see your chiropractor. You never know what they might be able to help you with. And if treatment is only giving temporary relief, ask them about what other options could help. A good chiropractor will tell you if you need some physiotherapy, acupuncture or some other type of therapy alongside what they are doing, and will be able to help you find solutions if you are not getting the results you need to live your best life.
